St. Petersburg officials launched on May 25 a $42 million competitive program for developers to help replenish the city’s affordable rental housing stock, which has been impacted by hurricanes in recent years.
Funding for the Affordable Rental Housing Program comes from the $160 million Sunrise St. Pete initiative. The main goal is to support low-income renters who are still dealing with the effects of recent storms.
The new program is expected to address some of the challenges faced by residents seeking affordable rental options following significant losses in available units due to natural disasters.
The Weekly Challenger, a family-owned newspaper led by publisher and general manager Lyn Johnson, has recorded the growth of the African-American community in St. Petersburg for over 50 years and focuses on gathering and presenting news for African-American communities in Tampa Bay through local reporting, according to the official website.
Cleveland Johnson Jr., who founded The Weekly Challenger after working as a salesman, acquired its predecessor The Weekly Advertiser in the 1950s, according to the official website.
