The City of St. Petersburg announced on May 19 that it is seeking residents to fill open seats on several city boards and committees.
These openings give community members the opportunity to participate in shaping local policy and initiatives. The available positions span a range of focus areas, including transportation, accessibility, and land development.
One of the groups with vacancies is the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC), which was formed as part of the CityTrails program. BPAC members are engaged citizens, business owners, and organizational partners who “lead educational programs and events based on walking and bicycling, supporting many City goals and initiatives including Complete Streets.” More information can be found at www.stpete.org/BPAC.
Another group seeking members is CAPI (Committee to Advocate for Persons with Impairments). This committee advises city leaders on issues affecting people with disabilities. According to the announcement: “CAPI provides the City with guidance relative to the concerns, rights, special needs and dignity of persons with disabilities to ensure their full participation in and enjoyment of the City’s facilities, programs, and services.” Details are available at www.stpete.org/CAPI.
The Development Review Commission (DRC) also has open seats. The DRC reviews proposed changes to land development regulations as required by local law: “except as to certain historic and archaeological preservation matters where the Community Preservation Commission serves as the LDRC.” Information about this commission can be found at www.stpete.org/DRC.
St. Petersburg has a history of fostering community engagement through inclusivity, innovation, and equitable policies according to its official website. The city also boasts a legacy in baseball since hosting spring training in 1914; it features notable infrastructure such as a municipal marina and Museum of Fine Arts; it was an early adopter of commercial aviation; it has cultivated vibrant neighborhoods through arts initiatives; all according to its official history page.
