The City of St. Petersburg is urging residents to begin preparations for the 2024 hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
Residents are encouraged to stock up on hurricane essentials during the 14-day Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax holiday from June 1-14 and August 24 – September 6. Examples of tax-free items include flashlights, lanterns, radios, coolers, portable power banks, batteries, fuel tanks, and generators. The City recommends reviewing the “Good Neighbor Guide to Hurricane Planning” available at stpete.org/GNG for tips on how to prepare for hurricane season. Residents can also look up their hurricane evacuation level at kyz.pinellascounty.org and review Pinellas County’s Hurricane Guide at pinellas.gov/Hurricane. St. Petersburg offers free sandbags year-round at the Pavement and Traffic Operations Building located at 1744 9th Ave. N during City business hours (Monday-Friday). Households can receive up to ten pre-filled sandbags each; however, this location will close during a declared emergency. Further details are available at stpete.org/Sandbags.
Residents are encouraged to sign up for emergency notifications through Alert Pinellas at pinellas.gov/Alert and stay updated with storm information from the National Hurricane Center at nhc.noaa.gov.
