The Eckerd College sailing team ended its run at the Open Fleet National Championship on May 21, finishing 16th out of 18 teams in the eastern division. The event took place over two days and featured challenging weather conditions for competitors.
This result highlights the team’s efforts to compete at a high level among collegiate sailing programs. Participation in national championships provides student-athletes with valuable experience and showcases their skills against top teams from across the country.
Jordan Vieira and Tia Soultanakis, along with Paul Rodrigues Jr. and Avery Guck, represented Eckerd during the races. On day one, hot and humid weather with early clouds led to afternoon storms. Racing began at 9:30 a.m., with winds starting at 10-11 knots before dropping to just above minimum levels by midday. Four A division races were completed along with two B division races before thunderstorms halted further competition for the day. The team posted its best finish of seventh place in race two of the A division.
Day two brought sunny skies and east winds at nine to ten knots as racing started earlier than usual due to incomplete heats from day one. Wind conditions again changed by midday, causing delays until a sea breeze allowed racing to resume later in the afternoon. By event’s end, each division had completed seven races for both eastern and western groups, totaling twenty-eight races overall. Notably, Eckerd achieved two top-five finishes on the final day—both coming from B division crews—with a second-place finish in their last race.
