For that period, the facility received a one-star overall CMS rating, notably lower than Florida’s statewide nursing home average of 3.3. CMS assigns these ratings based on outcomes of health inspections, staff levels, and resident care quality.
Data indicate South Heritage Health & Rehabilitation Center cared for an average of 61.1 residents per day in the first quarter of 2026, with 74 licensed beds. The facility currently is not affiliated with a hospital.
Also in the first quarter of 2026, the center incurred two fines totaling $174,565 and faced two penalties.
Across Pinellas County, there were 12 non-profit nursing homes in operation.
Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the aging population continues to rise nationwide, as the number of younger individuals declines. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and older increased by 13%, while those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. The nation’s older adult population has risen sharply over the past century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.
A study from 2021 found that nearly half of those 65 and older—approximately 28 million people—may need long-term services and support, with projections that more than one-third could ultimately require nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
