The St. Petersburg City Council has approved the acquisition of a GIS-based system to enhance the city’s ability to forecast and assess coastal flooding. This new technology is part of the Coastal Conditions Monitoring Project, which aims to strengthen the city’s preparedness for storm surge, tides, and other climate-related impacts.

“Through the Coastal Conditions Monitoring Project, we are equipping ourselves with the necessary resources to help us be better prepared to monitor and respond to climate-related impacts in our community,” said Mayor Kenneth T. Welch. “In alignment with our Environment, Infrastructure, and Resilience Pillar for Progress, this technology is another example of our commitment to identifying innovative solutions that will increase our City’s resiliency against climate change. I want to thank City Council for their support of this vital project and look forward to implementing this new system.”

The project will provide real-time and predictive information to improve response strategies during tide and storm surge events. It also supports the development of advanced modeling tools that combine local terrain, infrastructure, and environmental data for high-resolution flood forecasts.

City officials expect these tools will deliver timely information for decision-making before, during, and after flood events. The initiative is also intended to aid long-term planning efforts focused on protecting vulnerable infrastructure and increasing public safety.

Clearview Land Design, P.L. has been chosen to manage the project. Supporting documents related to this agreement are available on page 122 of the September 4 City Council Agenda.
