The City of St. Petersburg is organizing a Falls Prevention program aimed at reducing the risk of falls among senior citizens. Scheduled for September 23-27, 2024, the event will take place at the Sunshine Senior Center, located at 330 5th St. N., and is sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department’s Office on Aging.

Falls Prevention Week will offer five days of activities designed to educate seniors on prevention techniques. The schedule includes “Healthy Steps” sessions on Monday and Tuesday afternoons, an “Ageless Grace Exercise Class” on Tuesday morning, a Tai Chi demonstration on Wednesday morning, and a lunch and learn session with Dr. Minaya focusing on neuropathy that same afternoon.

Thursday will feature a Falls Talk & Resource Fair starting at 12:30 p.m., with Lendel Bright presenting a talk at 1 p.m. On Friday, participants can join a field trip to NOVA University’s Falls Prevention Lab in the morning, followed by Falls Prevention Bingo & Trivia in the afternoon.

The Sunshine Senior Center collaborates with the National Council on Aging to help older adults stay fall-free. This series of events provides an opportunity for seniors and caregivers to learn effective fall prevention strategies.
