The City of St. Petersburg is actively monitoring Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, which is anticipated to develop into a tropical storm by Tuesday, September 24, and potentially escalate to hurricane status by Wednesday, September 25. Although it remains uncertain how the cyclone will affect St. Petersburg specifically, potential impacts could commence as early as Wednesday due to the storm’s significant size.
Coastal areas along Florida’s west coast might experience storm surge flooding starting late Wednesday. Residents are encouraged to visit stpete.org/flooding for preparation guidelines.
Updates regarding the cyclone will be available on stpete.org/hurricane and disseminated through Alert Pinellas and social media platforms Facebook (@StPeteFL), X (@StPeteFL), and Instagram (@StPeteFL).
The Emergency Operation Center (EOC) in St. Petersburg will enter partial activation on Tuesday, September 24. In response to the anticipated weather conditions, all non-childcare Parks & Recreation programs scheduled for after 5 p.m. on Wednesday will be canceled.
City personnel are deploying pump stations in Riviera Bay and Shore Acres while positioning generators in strategic locations. Additionally, staff are cleaning storm drains in low-lying areas and inspecting grates and inlets.
