February 10, 2025 – The City of St. Petersburg, in collaboration with Ready For Life, Inc., has announced that the Youth Opportunity Grants Program for Former Foster Youth is now open for applications. This initiative targets young adults aged 18-27 who were previously in foster care and are not currently engaged in formal aftercare services. Applications will be accepted until February 28, 2025.
The program offers monthly cash disbursements of $500 over a period of 12 months to eligible participants. To qualify, applicants must have been in out-of-home care between the ages of 14 and 18 without reunification and currently reside in Pinellas County while living, working, or studying in St. Petersburg. Additionally, they should not be receiving any formal support services from the child welfare system.
This grant aims to address challenges faced by former foster youth as they transition into adulthood by providing financial assistance that supplements existing income and safety nets. Former foster youth often encounter barriers such as homelessness, human trafficking risks, and mental health issues due to a lack of resources and family support.
Research indicates that similar programs have resulted in increased full-time employment rates, better financial management for unexpected expenses, and improved emotional well-being among participants. With this program, St. Petersburg joins Gainesville as one of only two Florida cities offering city government-led direct cash transfer programs.
Ready for Life, Inc., based in Pinellas County, will administer the program following its selection through an RFP process by the City of St. Petersburg. The organization focuses on preventing homelessness among former foster care youth while providing education and employment support alongside lifeline networks.
Funding for this initiative comes from nearly $1 million allocated from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which supports COVID-19 recovery efforts focusing on equitable outcomes for those most affected by the pandemic.
