The City of St. Petersburg is actively preparing for Hurricane Milton while continuing recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene. Mayor Kenneth T. Welch provided an update on the city’s storm preparations during a press conference held by Pinellas County regarding Hurricane Milton.
Weather impacts, including high winds and rainfall, are expected to begin Tuesday evening and continue into early Wednesday morning. The forecast predicts a storm surge up to 10 feet, higher than that experienced during Hurricane Helene.
Pinellas County has issued mandatory evacuations for all residential healthcare facilities in Zones A, B, and C as of Sunday afternoon. Voluntary evacuations are encouraged for residents in these zones ahead of potential mandatory orders on Monday. Additionally, a voluntary evacuation has been suggested for Zone D residents.
City sanitation services will operate normally on Monday and Tuesday. However, all city facilities will be closed to the public from Monday through Wednesday, including Parks & Recreation programming and Sunken Gardens. Pinellas County schools will also be closed during this period.
All City Council Meetings scheduled for Thursday have been canceled due to the impending storm. Remote permitting sites have been closed as part of the preparations but homeowners can still file permits at the main office located at One 4th St. N.
Shelters will soon open across Pinellas County for residents needing refuge from the storm’s impact. Special arrangements are available for residents with special needs or those dependent on power who require assistance evacuating; they should contact the Pinellas County Information Center at 727-464-4333.
Free parking is being offered at South Core parking garage starting Monday evening until Tuesday evening or until full capacity is reached to help residents elevate their vehicles before the storm hits.
Residents in mandatory evacuation zones are urged to leave promptly as power, water, or sewer services may be disrupted post-landfall and emergency responders might not reach them immediately if they remain behind.
Preparations such as conserving water use and elevating household items against potential flooding are advised as Hurricane Milton approaches.
For real-time updates on the storm situation, residents can sign up for Alert Pinellas or download the Ready Pinellas app available in major app stores. Regular monitoring of local news media and official social media channels is recommended every 6-12 hours due to rapidly changing forecasts.
