The City of St. Petersburg has been recognized for its commitment to parkland preservation and recreational access. According to the 2025 ParkScore index by The Trust for Public Land, St. Pete ranks No. 1 in Florida and No. 14 nationally. This ranking highlights the city’s dedication to providing high-quality green spaces for both residents and visitors.

Mike Jefferis, Community Enrichment Administrator, stated, “This recognition reflects our long-standing commitment to building an inclusive and vibrant parks system that supports wellness, sustainability, and community.” He emphasized that the parks serve as vital community hubs offering various activities from outdoor fitness to family-friendly events.

The ParkScore index evaluates the largest U.S. cities based on criteria such as access, acreage, amenities, equity, and investment. St. Pete scored particularly well in equity and investment with a score of 78 out of 100 in each category. The report notes that 75% of city residents live within a ten-minute walk of a park.

St. Pete surpassed several cities known for their outdoor living environments like Austin, TX; San Diego, CA; and Atlanta, GA.

The Parks and Recreation Department of St. Petersburg uses a strategic placemaking approach in park development focusing on community connection, environmental protection, and equitable access across neighborhoods.
