CITY OF ST. PETE BEACH: Black Skimmers are currently nesting on St. Pete Beach near the County Park beach access area

Skimmers

City Of St. Pete Beach issued the following announcement on Jul 11.

Make way! Black Skimmers are currently nesting on St. Pete Beach near the County Park beach access area. They are a threatened species that makes their nests in small depressions in the sand, and their eggs are difficult to see due to their camouflaged nature. Here’s some tips for helping the Black Skimmers during nesting season:

·Keep your distance and respect posted areas. If the birds become agitated, you are too close!

·Do not flush the birds away from their nesting area, or they may not return.

·Keep pets off the beach and away from nesting areas, as they can scare off an entire colony.

·Avoid feeding wildlife, especially seagulls and crows, as those birds put the nests and chicks at risk for predation.
