Beginning on August 5, 2024, the wastewater collection system faced significant discharges from manholes at four locations due to flooding caused by Hurricane Debby. These discharges were halted by August 6.
At the first location, approximately 30,000 gallons of wastewater were discharged from two manholes on the 6600 block of 34th Ave. N., mixing with floodwater and entering Miles Creek.
The second location saw about 152,050 gallons discharged from ten manholes at the 6000 block of 22nd Ave. N. The wastewater mixed with floodwater and entered a ditch on 22nd Ave. N. and 58th St. N. Crews managed to prevent 94,000 gallons from discharging by using tanker trucks for capture.
At the third location, around 62,100 gallons were discharged from three manholes at the 2500 block of 39th Ave. N., where it mixed with floodwater and entered Shore Lake.
The fourth location experienced a discharge of approximately 185,040 gallons from eleven manholes at the 800 block of 53rd Ave. N. Of this amount, crews recovered 34,000 gallons from the ground while the remaining mixed with floodwater entered the canal at 54th Ave. N./Dr. MLK St. N Canal. An additional prevention effort saved another 34,000 gallons using tanker trucks before it reached the ground.
