The City of St. Petersburg has completed a tree planting initiative in the Childs Park neighborhood, adding 183 new trees to the area. This project was funded by a grant from the U.S. Forest Service and aimed to increase tree canopy cover, improve air quality, mitigate the heat island effect, and reduce stormwater flooding.
The trees were selected for their ability to reduce air pollutants, provide shade, and assist in stormwater management.
Community involvement played a key role in this project. The City engaged with Childs Park residents through neighborhood association meetings, door-to-door sessions, and educational workshops. Local volunteers joined City crews to plant trees in public spaces such as parks and school grounds.
The City plans to continue planting additional trees in Childs Park over the next two years as part of its commitment to improving the local environment and engaging with the community.
