St. Petersburg will mark the start of Black History Month with a flag-raising ceremony on January 31 at 9 a.m. The event, taking place outside City Hall at 175 5th St. N, will feature remarks from Mayor Kenneth T. Welch, City Council Chair Copley Gerdes, and Terri Lipsey Scott, Executive Director of the Woodson African American Museum of Florida.

The Dr. Carter G. Woodson flag will be raised to honor the historian known as the "father of Black history." Dr. Woodson's contributions include founding the Association for the Study of African American Life and History in 1915 and initiating Negro History Week in 1926, which eventually became Black History Month.

The tradition of raising this flag began in 2016 and is an annual event for St. Petersburg. The ceremony will also be streamed live on The City's Facebook page.
