The City of St. Petersburg has appointed Eric Vaughan as the new LGBTQ+ Liaison, succeeding Jim Nixon, who held the position for seven years. Vaughan, who previously served as the LGBTQ+ Liaison for the Department of Education in New York City, joined the Office of the Mayor in May 2023.

Mayor Kenneth T. Welch expressed confidence in Vaughan's abilities, stating, "Eric Vaughan brings strong connections within the LGBTQ+ community, both locally and nationally, to the City's LGBTQ+ Liaison role." Mayor Welch further added, "I am confident that he will build on Jim Nixon's efforts to foster an environment of acceptance and support across St. Petersburg. Together, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a city where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, can thrive."

Vaughan's experience includes roles at local organizations such as Big Brother Big Sisters of Pinellas County, USF St. Petersburg, and Community Tampa Bay. He has also been actively involved in various boards and committees within the community, showcasing his dedication to advocacy and inclusivity.

Jim Nixon, the outgoing LGBTQ+ Liaison, has been instrumental in driving initiatives that promote equality and inclusivity within the city. Under his leadership, St. Petersburg achieved a perfect score of 100 for seven consecutive years on the Human Rights Council Municipal Equality Index, highlighting the city's ongoing commitment to equality. Nixon will continue his service to the city as the Director of the St. Pete Service Center.

The appointment of Eric Vaughan signals a continuation of St. Petersburg's dedication to creating a city that embraces diversity and ensures that all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, are supported and valued.
