In an effort to address the housing needs of school employees and essential workers, a new affordable housing development has broken ground in South St. Petersburg. The project, known as Bayou Court Apartments, aims to provide affordable housing options for those who work in the local community.
Pinellas County Commissioner Rene Flowers emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "As a result of the impending housing crisis, Pinellas County sought to forge relationships with developers to create affordable units like Bayou Court."
The development, located at 4201 6th St. S., St. Petersburg, will consist of 60 apartments, all with two bedrooms and two baths. The rental rates will be tailored to be affordable for moderate to low-wage workers, with units allocated for different income brackets.
St. Petersburg Mayor Kenneth T. Welch expressed gratitude to all involved in making the project a reality, stating, "Bayou Court is another win for affordable housing in St. Pete. Together, we're building a stronger, more inclusive St. Pete."
The $17-million Bayou Court development project was made possible through funding from various sources, including the Penny for Pinellas fund and the City of St. Petersburg. The apartments are expected to open in 2025 and will prioritize school and government employees for tenancy.
The development of Bayou Court comes as part of a countywide partnership aimed at ensuring affordable housing options for residents. The initiative aligns with the broader goal of creating safe, clean, and affordable housing for the community.
The Bayou Court project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of local governments, developers, contractors, and community members towards addressing the housing needs of the region. It reflects a step forward in providing accessible housing options for those who play vital roles in the community.
