The City of St. Petersburg has announced the opening of applications for the Youth Opportunity Grants for Career and College Readiness Grant Program. This initiative aims to support at-risk, disengaged, and nearly disengaged youth through local nonprofit organizations.
Applications are currently being accepted and will remain open until February 10. Each grant amounts to $20,000, with funding available for up to four nonprofits. The program is designed to fund educational and enrichment programs that help young people aged 3 to 24 reach their full potential.
Eligible programs should focus on equipping youth with tools for effective goal-setting and future planning, exposing them to various career paths and post-secondary opportunities, and encouraging civic engagement through community service. The city aims to create accessible opportunities that inspire growth and education while fostering a sense of purpose among St. Petersburg's youth.
Dr. Sheron Brown, the City's Director of Education and Youth Opportunities, emphasized the importance of this initiative: "Our young people deserve access to pathways that prepare them for success in school, in the workforce, and in life," she said. "The Youth Opportunity Grants program is designed to provide much-needed resources to organizations that directly serve at-risk and disengaged youth in St. Petersburg. Together, we can help open doors to brighter futures for those who need it most."
This effort aligns with Mayor Welch's Pillar For Progress Education and Youth Opportunities agenda, which focuses on developing practical educational programs leading to a better-prepared workforce. The Mayor’s Opportunity Agenda emphasizes mentorships, digital literacy access, internships, and skills training in fields such as construction, plumbing, and auto repair.
