City Of St. Pete Beach issued the following announcement on Aug. 31.
With Labor Day weekend on the horizon, we’d like to take a second to remind everyone that it is still sea turtle nesting season (it runs through the end of October). With that in mind, here’s 3 basic principles to keep in mind to help these endangered species:
Flat: Fill in any holes in the sand that you encounter. This helps to ensure that mother sea turtles and the hatchlings can have a clear passage onto the sand and back into the water.
Dark: Remember to turn off any unnecessary lights outside your home, and close curtains/blinds to keep your indoor lights from spilling out onto the beach. If you require outdoor lighting, use long-wavelength light bulbs that are yellow, amber or red, as they are far less distracting to sea turtles.
Clean: Keep our beaches clean so that sea turtles do not encounter any obstructions while nesting and traveling to the water. Think beyond trash; abandoned chairs, umbrellas, tents and swimming/recreational equipment must also be removed from our beaches.
