On May 14, 2024, Mayor Kenneth T. Welch of St. Petersburg announced the establishment of two new roles within the Office of Equity to further the city's Neighborhood Health and Safety Pillar for Progress. Reverend Kenny Irby will serve as the Faith and Community Justice Liaison, while Lisa Wheeler-Bowman will assume the role of Community Impact and Safety Liaison.
Mayor Welch expressed his commitment to ensuring safe neighborhoods in St. Petersburg amidst rising gun violence, negative social media influences, and the pervasive impacts of poverty. He said, “In this era of increasing gun violence, negative social media influences, and the many impacts of poverty, we are committed to innovation and collaboration to provide safe neighborhoods for all in St. Petersburg."
Rev. Irby’s strong connections with faith leaders and their communities are expected to foster a deeper understanding of how the city can better serve its residents. As a mother who lost a child to gun violence, Ms. Wheeler-Bowman brings a unique perspective that will resonate with youth and young adults. Mayor Welch believes that their combined experiences will positively impact local youth and families.
Rev. Kenny Irby has a long history as a servant leader in St. Pete. His careers in photojournalism and ministry outreach have allowed him to connect with needy youth and their families. He currently serves as the Senior Pastor at Historic Bethel AME Church, the city’s first predominantly African-American church, and as President of Men in the Making, a mentoring program.
Former City Council Member Lisa Wheeler-Bowman will spearhead initiatives supporting at-risk youth as Community Impact and Safety Liaison, aiming to create a safer environment in St. Pete.
The Office of Equity was established in 2023 with Carl R. Lavender Jr., serving as Interim Chief Equity Officer. The office is responsible for developing equity policies for St.Petersburg under Mayor Ken Welch's Five Pillars for Progress, working towards a city where all residents can thrive and succeed.
