June 5, 2024 - With neighborhood health and safety as one of St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch's key pillars for progress, the city has launched 'Safe Summer' activities aimed at ensuring the safety of children throughout the summer.

"A 'Safe Summer' is defined as one where residents in the community take the initiative to be active in neighborhood projects and programs," said Lisa Wheeler-Bowman, the city's Community Impact and Safety Liaison. "St. Pete residents are encouraged to be vigilant and to take care of the people that live around them. 'See something, say something' is the main focus of this summer programming."

The initiative will feature Safe Summer Fridays: The Block Party, a new event series held every other Friday from June 14 to August 9, from 6:30-10:30 p.m., at Lake Vista Recreation Center, located at 1401 62nd Ave. S.

Safe Summer Fridays are designed for youth ages 12-16 and will provide a safe space for young teens to enjoy an open gym, movie night, and refreshments. Guardians must sign a waiver upon arrival for their teens to participate in these evening events.

The scheduled dates for Safe Summer Fridays are June 14, June 28, July 12, July 26, and August 9. Updates and more information can be found at www.stpete.org/safesummer.
