The City of St. Petersburg, in collaboration with Tampa Bay Watch, has announced the Maximo Park Living Shoreline Project, scheduled to take place from July 9-11, 2024. This initiative aims to enhance coastal resilience and environmental health through the installation of oyster reef balls and shell bags along the southern shoreline of Maximo Park.

Volunteers and staff from the City of St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation will assist in installing hundreds of oyster reef balls and shell bags. The project plans to create a living shoreline spanning 7,842 square feet, strategically positioned to mitigate erosion, protect cultural artifacts, restore coastal habitats, and improve water quality in the area.

"This project underscores our dedication to sustainable coastal management," said Allison Mihalich, Director of the City of St. Petersburg's Office of Sustainability & Resilience. "Partnering with Tampa Bay Watch allows us to protect our shorelines, enhance biodiversity, and improve water quality. It's a significant step toward a resilient and thriving coastal ecosystem, and we are proud to engage the community in this vital effort."
