This week, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue hosted the inaugural "Camp Ignite," a three-day pilot program designed to engage and empower teenage girls by introducing them to the fire service. The camp, held from July 8 to July 10, was launched by St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Chief Keith Watts in collaboration with the Pinellas County Urban League as part of their "EmpowHer" initiative.

"We're not just focused on exposing the girls to firefighting," said Chief Watts. "We want them to know they can be good at it."

The program included twelve participants aged 14 to 18 who were stationed at St. Pete Fire Rescue headquarters. They received hands-on training in fire and EMS operations from female leaders within the department. Additionally, campers learned valuable life skills, met local firefighters, and graduated with CPR certification.

The camp featured three main stations of basic fireground activities:

- Extrication Equipment (Jaws of Life): Learning how to rescue trapped individuals from vehicles.

- Rope Rescue Operations: Experiencing being lowered from the second story of the training tower.

- Nozzle Operations: Practicing hose work, flowing water, knocking down cones, and operating extinguishers.

On July 10, Camp Ignite concluded with a graduation ceremony where certificates were presented to all twelve participants for their hard work and accomplishments over the three days. Remarks were given by Mayor Ken Welch, Chief Keith Watts, and other dignitaries.

Background information highlights that in 1982, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue hired its first female firefighter who served for 23 years. Inspired by her legacy, Camp Ignite aims to foster a new generation of female leaders in the fire service.
